Vintage Burmese Kalaga Framed Textile In Seattle WA
|
|
This is a vintage framed Burmese kalaga textile, 44" x 73", in fair to good condition, showing many repairs that have been expertly done. There are 21 figures sewn into the cloth with silver and copper gimp, mirror glass, sequins, silk threads, cotton and velvet. It is a very impressive example of this Burmese art and is likely dated circa 1920s, but certainly before 1940. Prior to the outbreak of World War II, the Japanese attempted to destroy all examples of Burmese art and culture. Such textiles were made either in the Mandalay area or near Pagan, both in central Burma. These kalaga cloths are only found in Burma and are characterized by embroidery, couching and fine sewing. It can be seen by appointment. Call Mick Odell at EMA International Sales & Auction LLC at 206-542-4460, or 604-260-5576 from Canada.
